A Food Pantry was opened in October, 1993 to help to combat the growing hunger problems in the area. Non-perishable food stuffs are purchased by the Center from the SHARE (Southern Appalachian Food Bank) at a very low cost and are distributed to elderly, sick and needy families in the community at no cost to them. The Sunset Gap Community Center has many varied community programs which include first aide, CPR, gun safety courses, new parenting classes, family pot-luck fellowship suppers, quilting & craft classes, exercise classes and many others that help to promote education, health, and self worth. The Center is currently serving about 600 families on a monthly basis. The Thrift Shop relies entirely gifts and donations from many churches. New and used items are always welcome for our Thrift shop, especially baby items and clothing for children. The Sunset Gap Pre-School runs four days a week. Teachers in local public schools praise our pre-school as one of the best in the area. Our Van picks up children and takes them home each day. This program give area children a chance for interaction among other children, early developmental opportunities a well as a chance to spot potential educational problems early. Mission Statement: Sunset Gap Community Center, Inc is to extend the gospel of Jesus Christ by providing programs that contribute to physical, social, and spiritual growth while maintaining teaching, training, and service without prejudice so that all shall know the dignity and worth that is theirs as a people of God. Please never forget that our programs exist because of folks like you. We have installed heating and air conditioning in the dorm and have just finished remodeling the bathrooms there. Our work camps began last month. We are already booked for almost every week this spring and summer and have been out looking at more work sites. We always look forward to meeting all the that come our way and really appreciate the work the do in our community. Thanks again for your loving support of our mission. We couldn't do it without you. God bless you! Gratefully, Jonathan Pflug, Director |
