The Second Harvest Food Bank is a non-profit service organization dedicated to alleviating hunger in our community. Its primary commitment to the 18-county area that it serves is to gather and provide surplus food to local charity agencies that compassionately feed the hungry every day.
An estimated 160,000 people live in poverty in East Tennessee and are at risk of missing a meal every day. Many of them are elderly, sick and/or children. Some are working parents whose limited income and resources force them to choose between shelter or bills, and food for their families. Second Harvest helps ensure that food is available to people in need.
Second Harvest began operating in 1982 with volunteers collecting food in their personal mini-vans. Now, Second Harvest trucks drive around East Tennessee on a daily basis, picking up and delivering food that would otherwise be thrown away.
